Instead of rubber to metal contact there is metal to metal contact. “limp home tabs” is just a joke name for when this happens.
edit: here’s a photo I found of the back of the clutch:
When the rubber goes bad there’s metal to metal contact between those tabs around the center.

Huh.
Okay, comparing that to the posted GIF, I’m guessing that those tabs just “float” until the rubber twists itself apart, allowing them to make contact. I can see how that would make the clutch engagement feel absolutely lousy.
It’s neat that they had that feature, but I still don’t like the whole rubber design. Springs FTW.
